چکیده

Cover photograph: Transmission electron micrographs of wild-type (top) and phoU mutant (bottom) cells of the Gram-negative alphaproteobacterium Sinorhizobium meliloti. The cells were cultured in morpholinepropanesulfonic acid-buffered minimal medium with 7.5 mM glucose and 2 mM KH2PO4. Unlike the uniform rod-shaped wild-type cells, the phoU mutant cells are enlarged and pleomorphic, accumulate polyphosphate, and have lost viability. Samples were fixed in 2% (vol/vol) glutaraldehyde and poststained with uranyl acetate and lead citrate. The scale bar represents 0.5 m, and the magnifications of the panels are equal. The Canonical Wnt Signaling (Wnt/β-Catenin Pathway): A Potential Target for Cancer Prevention and Therapy

Precise regulation of signal transduction pathways is crucial for normal animal development and for maintaining cellular and tissue homeostasis in adults. The Wnt/Frizzled-mediated signaling includes canonical and non-canonical signal transduction pathways. Upregulation or downregulation of the canonical Wnt-signaling (or the Wnt/β-Catenin signal transduction) leads to a variety of human diseas...

The Expression of Signal Regulatory Protein-alpha in Normal and Osteoarthritic Human Articular Cartilage and Its Involvement in Chondrocyte Mechano-transduction Response

Signal regulatory proteins (SIRP) belong to immunoglobulin super family (IgSF) and relate to integrin signaling cascades. It has been shown that SIRPa is expressed in a variety of cells including myeloid cells and neurons. In the present study the expression of this IgSF member in articular chondrocytes was investigated. Methods: Using a panel of anti-SIRPalpha antibodies, immunohistochemistry...

Bacterial chemotaxis: a new player in response regulator dephosphorylation.

Escherichia coli chemotaxis is arguably the best understood of all biological behaviors, but even this relatively “simple” system continues to offer up new molecular insights from Evolution’s bag of signaling tricks. The latest surprise comes from Silversmith et al. (15), who report in this issue how the X-ray structure of a mutant CheY protein led them to the discovery of a CheY residue that p...

Four unusual two-component signal transduction homologs, RedC to RedF, are necessary for timely development in Myxococcus xanthus.

We identified a cluster of four two-component signal transduction genes that are necessary for proper progression of Myxococcus xanthus through development. redC to redF mutants developed and sporulated early, resulting in small, numerous, and disorganized fruiting bodies. Yeast two-hybrid analyses suggest that RedCDEF act in a single signaling pathway. The previously identified espA gene displ...

Overexpression of the response regulator evgA of the two-component signal transduction system modulates multidrug resistance conferred by multidrug resistance transporters.

Overexpression of evgA, a response regulator of a two-component system, increased multidrug efflux in Escherichia coli. Since overexpression of the emrKY operon, which is controlled by evgAS, could account only for deoxycholate resistance, the evgAS locus apparently controls expression of at least one other multidrug efflux operon.
